Ecotricity founder and Forest Green Rovers chairman Dale Vince has already been recognised by the United Nations this year for his environmental work to make Britain greener. Today, he鈥檚 launching a new Sports for Climate Action initiative at UN climate change talks in Poland.
Sports for Climate Action will build on Dale鈥檚 work with FGR by encouraging the global sporting community to tackle climate change in line with the aims set out by the Paris Agreement. Dale will speak at the conference to mark FGR鈥檚 Momentum for Change award from the UN, before doing a talk on how he created the .
FGR have demonstrated the power of sport in driving climate change awareness to a new audience, and were recognised by the UNFCCC as the only carbon neutral club in the world. They鈥檝e also been recognised by FIFA as the greenest football club in the world, with their organic pitch, vegan matchday menu, stadium solar panels, and electric vehicle charging points.
Dale said: 鈥淲orking with FGR, we thought we could reach a new audience of people 鈥 people who hadn鈥檛 really been touched by eco messaging in the past. It鈥檚 quite an improbable combination, I think 鈥 the environment and football 鈥 but we鈥檝e pulled it off.
鈥溁使谔逵齛pp鈥檝e reached 3.5 billion people just in the last year through our message, and we鈥檝e engaged a lot with other sports clubs and organisations around the world, so it鈥檚 been a great success.
鈥淭ackling climate change seems to me to be the most important thing in life. For me, it鈥檚 all about sustainability, and climate change is the biggest threat that we face.鈥
