At Ecotricity everything we do is in pursuit of a greener Britain. Our Smart Export Tariff (SET) is an important step towards this goal, making the most of every kilowatt of green energy generated by domestic solar panels and windmills across the country.

When we pay you to use your excess energy, the national grid gets more green energy and you get more money 鈥 it鈥檚 the perfect combination!

A short history of export tariffs

The Feed-in Tariff (FIT) - the government鈥檚 first energy export scheme for home customers 鈥 was launched in 2010 as an incentive to persuade people to install solar panels. It closed to new applicants in 2019, but we still support FIT through our Microtricity service, where existing scheme members can earn money for their energy exports.

In 2020, the government launched the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme, which covers both domestic and business energy export. 皇冠体育app chose not to opt in as a voluntary provider for SEG because we wanted to focus on our domestic customers first.

The key difference between FIT and SEG is that while FIT paid you for all the energy your home system generated, SEG only pays for the energy that is exported 鈥 in other words, what鈥檚 left over after your domestic consumption.

Our Smart Export Tariff

As part of our mission to end fossil fuels, we decided that we needed to create the best possible solution for people who want to export their energy to the grid. With the systems for this in place, we can bring you all sorts of new features like Smart Grids and Time of Use tariffs.

The result is our Smart Export Tariff, a simple, easy-to-use export tariff for home customers with solar panels or a wind turbine. You don鈥檛 need to be an Ecotricity customer to join, but you will get an even-more competitive rate for your energy if you are.

Why choose Ecotricity for your energy exports?

Our Smart Export Tariff is easy to set up and works through your smart meter. 皇冠体育app鈥檒l send you a detailed summary of your energy exports every three months and pay you handsomely for it.

But the real reason to choose us is what we do afterwards. Joining Ecotricity is one of the biggest things you can do to help fight climate change. Instead of paying dividends like other energy companies, we invest our profits in building new sources of green energy.

Join our Smart Export Tariff and you鈥檒l be directly helping to fight the climate crisis and make the green revolution a reality.

Climate Clock

The Climate Clock is a version of the Doomsday clock that has been running since 1947 - this tracks the risk of global man-made disaster, through man made technology (like nuclear weapons) - displaying the minutes and seconds left before midnight, when disaster strikes. The climate crisis is a small part of the calculations made. The climate clock uses a similar approach, but, focuses only on the climate crisis - which is the biggest and most urgent existential threat we face."The Climate Clock is a countdown to the biggest man-made disaster we face - but also a measure by which we can track our progress - moving from fossil to renewable energy. It shows we have no time to lose - the clock is ticking鈥" Dale Vince, OBE.
