Recent changes from energy regulator, Ofgem, have given small businesses additional rights. Here is what you need to know and how you can access the support you need.

What’s changed?

As of 19 December 2024, Ofgem has opened up access to the Energy Ombudsman’s independent dispute resolution services for the first time to cover small businesses, as defined by the regulator. In addition, these businesses can now get additional support from Citizens Advice and Citizens Advice Scotland.

Are you a small or micro business?

Ofgem defines a small business as a company that fulfils any of the following criteria:

1. A company that has fewer than 50 employees or their full-time equivalent, and an annual turnover of at most £6.5 million or a balance sheet total of up to £5 million.

2. A company with maximum annual electricity consumption of 200,000 kWh.

3. A company with maximum annual gas consumption of 500,000 kWh.

The support is also available to micro businesses. Ofgem defines a micro business as a company that fulfils any of the following criteria:

1. A company that has fewer than 10 employees or their full-time equivalent, and an annual turnover or balance sheet total of up to £2 million.

2. A company with maximum annual electricity consumption of 100,000 kWh.

3. A company with maximum annual gas consumption of 293,000 kWh.
