Destination Beach Bride

It may be cold outside but here at Details of I do, we are dreaming of golden sunshine, salty air and ocean breezes!  The beach has always been a popular choice for wedding ceremonies and receptions and having a destination wedding is often a fleeting thought for every newly engaged couple. While many ultimately decide against it because of logistics, family pressure and the financial burden it puts on their guests, others embrace the idea of a small intimate wedding in paradise. But a destination beach wedding doesn’t always mean getting on a plane and limiting your guest list, you can plan a destination wedding at a local beach town and have the best of both worlds! So whether you decide to get married home or away,  here are some things to consider when planning your destination beach wedding!

Pros & Cons of planning your beach wedding home and away:

Home

  1. Staying local means finding a resort beach town driving distance for you and the majority of your guests. By keeping your venue drivable, you don’t have to alienate any of your family and friends who aren’t able to fly or come up with the cash for an unplanned vacation.
  2. So now your at the beach! You may be close to home but the reality is that your far away enough to mentally check out and feel like your on vacation! You get all the perks of a traditional wedding but it feels like a  weekend getaway  rather then a one night event that is over to soon!
  3. Make it a long weekend! There are pros and cons to planning your beach wedding over a holiday. While it does mean crowds and more expensive rates, it also means your guests will most likely have more time off and appreciate being able to fully enjoy the festivities.

Away

  1. First and foremost, a destination wedding means you’ll have a limited amount of guests who will be able and willing to make the trip. On the flip side, it will save you a ton of cash. If you are looking for a small and intimate wedding without all the stresses and financial burdens of planning a ballroom wedding back home, then it’s the perfect scenario. Even better, it’s a wedding and a honeymoon all in one that includes your closest friends and family.
  2. Enlisting the help of a travel agent or destination wedding planner is key. They can advise you on what locations and resorts are the best fit, fill you in on local customs and legalities and assist with keeping your party together, negotiating group rates and staying on top of all the details. It’s also a great idea to plan group excursions and activities to make it a truly memorable and enjoyable time for everyone who made the trip.
  3. Be prepared to let go of the reigns and let your chosen venue do their thing. Trying to buck the system in a foreign country often leads to disappointment. Get ready to embrace the local culture and wedding traditions. Don’t expect trends and styles that you find here in the US to be the same in the islands. You can BYOV ( bring your own vendors ) but that can be a very pricey endeavor. My advice is to do a super fun styled engagement  shoot. You can get your hair and makeup done, put on your beach wedding gown and capture all of those tradition moments with a photographer of your choosing that you may not get at your destination wedding.
